Timbuktu Submisson Statement

General Submission Guidelines   Culture and Identity

A Modest Proposal.

Everything I do in my life is culture and identity.  It is the type of food I eat, it is the way I walk and talk, it is the way I make and create my life.  My culture is normal to me. It?s what I know and have been used to. It is my racial and ethnic heritage, my gender, my economic class, my physical ability. I want to create a multicultural forum where these composite elements meet. I want to cross the boundary of what is myself and meet others. For this journal I want the poor white woman to meet the wealthy black man, the gay man to meet the disabled woman. I want to open the possibility that we might communicate as individuals and cut through the separate development of races and cultures since it is only through the free exploring mind of the individual that change in society can be initiated.

Timbuktu would like to see intelligent sensitive original submissions.  These would include the visual arts, stories, articles, essays, poetry, educational ideas ? the list of creative possibilities for what would constitute a multicultural journal is endless.

A Provocation to Submit

Other people will categorise and define you; institutions will label you; scientists will measure you. Whether you resist or collude with the views of others, you are the expert on your own culture and identity. In exploring your relationship with the world, ? people, places, nature, society ? you will discover what is important to you. This can only happen in relationship, and therefore requires expression and communication, which is part of the function of artistic endeavour.

If you are interested in making this exploration for yourself with a wide range of others, Timbuktu aims to provide a stimulating forum in which to debate and question, and to which you may have something to contribute. What is important to you right now may be a place, a person, a feeling, an action, or some thing else, I don?t know. Perhaps it will last a lifetime, or it may change tomorrow. It may concern race, or religion, family, love or war, the World Wide Web or a single leaf. Whatever it is, if you can go to the depths of yourself and express it honestly, you will produce something worthwhile and of interest to others. Timbuktu cannot publish everything of course, but we will try to give a personal response to every serious piece we receive.
